Hey Guys! Happy Friday:) I receive lots of messages asking how I stay active during my pregnancy. I’m officially 31 weeks and in my third trimester. I can’t believe the end is so close. In a few days I will be 8 months (WOW)! Time is flying by! Throughout my pregnancy I’ve been lucky to maintain my active, healthy lifestyle. In the first trimester when I had migraines and nausea I didn’t do as many workouts but once I started feeling better I went right back to my routine.
Doctors and expects say that whatever your body was used to doing prior to pregnancy you can continue doing as long as you are listening to your body. That being said I feel everyone is different and every pregnancy is so different so having open communication with your doctor is key. For the past 2 years I’ve been doing Pilates consistently so I’ve continued to do my classes online (Physique 57 mostly) making adjustments and modifications depending on where I was in my pregnancy. In the first trimester you can lay on your back and still continue abs but once you hit the second trimester and more importantly after 20 weeks it’s no longer healthy to lay on your back so modifications need to be made. I still do planks to keep my core strengthened, which my doctor says is safe for me and actually going to help with labor but I no longer do any other core exercises.
In addition to Pilates I do cardio, SoulCycle, circuit training and of course dancing (if you watch my IG stories or have seen my Instagram I love to dance…haha). On vacation recently I swam in the ocean with fins and did stand-up paddle boarding but on my knees. I also walk a lot, which is one of the best forms of exercises for pregnancy. It not only keeps you active, it clears your mind. I always listen to my body and definitely can’t go to the extreme or do anything too hardcore. Beast mode is for after pregnancy! LOL:) What’s important is just to stay healthy and active for myself and my little love button. Even though it’s definitely more challenging to workout while pregnant given you have extra weight, you’re fatigued and your body is going through changes, it’s worth it when you do it. I never feel more accomplished and empowered than after a workout.
There are so many benefits to staying active during pregnancy…. it’s so healthy for you and the baby, you maintain your active lifestyle so you can recover and workout postpartum, you keep your weight controlled so you are not gaining over the healthy limit throughout your pregnancy, faster labor, and it helps with your mood and energy. These are just a few that are important to me but the list goes on and on!
I recently filmed a pre-natal workout video with my friend and health coach, Melissa Wood. Melissa is also pregnant so it was so fun working out together. I will be sharing the video soon so look out for that.
And because it’s Friday, have a little fun!! My love button and I love dancing together……I hope this inspires you to not take life too seriously:)
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend!
xoxo,
Lisa D.
